Two Drummers Sit Down at Two Grand Pianos (2022) is a piece reflecting on my own personal journey when I began to learn the piano. As a rock and pop drummer since the age of eight, moving from the rhythmic pulsation of the drum kit to the melodic beauty of a piano at the age of fifteen was a rather… tricky transition for me. I started to treat the piano as a rhythmic instrument, playing chords like drum grooves using my right hand to imitate cymbals and my left hand to imitate the bass and snare drums. I began looking back at my experience in an inspirational way. My naivety towards this "new" and classical instrument in fact caused me to create something that I find interesting and fun. I have used varied drumming rudiments throughout this piece, and I have imitated different drums by using different chords and degrees of the piano. For example, I have used the lower range of the piano to imitate the lower drums such as bass and low tom, then the higher range to imitate snare and cymbals. Directions of the hands and which notes they play is also especially important aspect of this piece as it foreshadows the way the drums would be played such as right hand playing the high-hat and the left hand on the snare, I have also included a variety of rudiments on individual notes that also music be played using certain hands, The title of this piece imitates the start of a joke, to emphasize the humor of my story. Depicting drum grooves and rudiments, this piece is dedicated to my comical start in my piano learning.
